“Anything is possible.” Every athlete training for the Olympic Trials is familiar with that mantra. Possibility gets them out the door and keeps them focused at the track. The delayed 2021 Olympic Trials feels different - after 2020 and Covid-19 we are all changed people. But what remains unchanged is the fire all of the athletes bring to the moment - they all step up in the Olympic year! The Oiselle Haute Volée are in the final countdown to the Trials, looking for those windows of opportunity. Follow their progress here as we break down who has qualified, who’s in the hunt, and their pathway to start lines and runways!
Riley Cooks: Heptathlon. Stats: PB + SB = 6,160 points, currently 3rd on 2021 US list, 9th on World list. Trials auto-Q met, Olympic standard 6420. The scoop: Riley has been on a tear this year, training at the Olympic training center at Chula Vista. She has already set personal bests in 2 of the 7 heptathlon disciplines (shot put and 100mH) and is stronger than ever. The US heptathlon team is one of the best in the world, and Riley can definitely break into that top 3. Seven events = 7 windows of opportunity. [The 7 heptathlon events: LJ, HJ, Shot, Javelin, 100mH, 200m, 800m over 2 days] Fun fact: Riley’s first job was at Jamba Juice!

Malaina Payton: Long Jump, PB + SB = 6.89m (22’7.25”), currently 7th on US list, 14th on World list. Trials auto-Q met, Olympic standard met! The scoop: Malaina has been so consistent at the 6.7+m range every time she jumps. She’s just waiting to pop a long one! Nothing beats long jump for the excitement factor, so get your rhythmic clapping ready. 3 prelim jumps, 3 final jumps, and adrenaline all the way.
Malaina’s superpower is turning nothing into something - she has an eye and determination for all DIY projects.

Mel Lawrence: 3k Steeplechase, PB + SB 9:27.34, currently 5th on US list, 14th on World list. Trials auto-Q met, Olympic standard met. The scoop: Mel took a nice break last summer/fall to fully heal an injury and rest her body, and her training has never been better. She also PR’d and auto-qualified for the Trials in the 5k! The steeple in the US is incredibly deep so look for a lot of tactics and guts on display during this trials/ final format. Fun Fact: Mel’s combined score for all 4 years at Foot Locker in HS was 11! (2nd three times and 5th once!)

The scoop: Megan has nothing to lose this year, and she’s been raising those bars with longer poles and more strength work. Talk about an “anything is possible” event - pole vault gives you 3 attempts at each bar height, no do-overs. Megan is looking to give it her all and leave the sport on a high; she is entering medical school at University of Arkansas in fall of ‘21! Megan highly recommends you follow Ryan Crouser, because he’s “pretty cool.”

Two-time Olympian Maria is returning to Race Walk after having her first baby; she’s been surprised by how good she feels. We believe she has the best form of anyone in her event - she has a great shot to make another Olympic Team! Go, Maria!

As an 800m/ 1500m dual specialist, she can either choose one of the events to compete in at the Trials, or she can double (1500m is the first weekend, 800m the 2nd weekend). Don’t let the rankings fool you, Rebecca’s competitive moxie puts her in the mix in every race. Fun fact: Rebecca had a poster of her current coach, Lauren Fleshman, on her bedroom wall growing up!

The scoop: whoa whoa whoa! Alli Cash (or CashMoney) is shattering all of her previous bests this year. This former U. of Oregon All-American turned UW volunteer assistant coach is proving that happiness + health = big-time success. Scarily enough, Alli has just turned her sights to the 5k, where she hopes to bust through the Olympics (15:10) standard. We’re betting cash money she does it!
